    Survey delves into the work lives of heavy-duty professional technicians

    A new survey by a provider of heavy-duty repair shop software sheds some significant light on the work lives of professional technicians.

     The State of Heavy-Duty Repair by Fullbay delivers insights into the men and women who work in the shops maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment. 

    The survey covers 2024-2025, and reveals plenty about the work lives of professional technicians, 59% of whom said they attended trade school.

    When asked what best describes their jobs:

    • 47% said they do in-shop and mobile work
    • 35% said they are in-shop only
    • 10% said they are mobile only

    No matter where they work, the survey found professional technicians are staying busy. The survey asked how many hours a week they work. It found:

    • 56% work between 41 and 50 hours a week
    • 24% work 31 to 40 hours
    • 12% work 51 to 60 hours
    • 3% work 61 to 70 hours
    • 3% work over 70 hours

    And, what are they paid for all of those hours? They survey found that professional technicians have seen their pay increase steadily in the last several years.

    Technicians self-reported they earned a median wage of $27 per hour in 2023, $29 per hour in 2024 and $30 per hour in 2025, when the survey was conducted.

    The number of techs being paid bonuses by their shops is pretty well dead even, with 49% saying they do not receive bonuses while 48% said they do. The vast majority – 68% – said those bonuses were handed out based on technician proficiency. Another 52% said bonuses were paid on training and certification and 51% said they were paid on technician performance.

    As for benefits, the survey found:

    • 66% of shops provide techs with health insurance
    • 58% provide paid time off
    • 44% allow flexible schedules
    • 22% offer 401K, while 35% of shops match those contributions
    • 35% pay for technicians’ training

    When it comes to the tools these technicians use, it’s a mixed bag if the shop buys them or if the tech is on their own. The survey found:

    • 41% said the shop only buys bigger tools
    • 19% said the shop does not buy tools
    • 18% said they do
    • 17% said the shop sometimes buys their tools

    As for other gear:

    • 79% said the shop provides safety equipment
    • 77% said they have uniforms provided
    • 35% said they are given boots by their shops

    Interestingly, the survey found that many shops do not require techs to be certified for the equipment on which they work. Results showed:

    • 77% said their shops do not require that sort of certification
    • 22% said they shops do

    And, just how satisfied are technicians in their work lives?

    When asked, “In the next year, are you looking to …:

    • 11% said start their own shop
    • 9% said leave their existing employer for a new opportunity
    • 1% said retire
    • 10% said “other”
    • 68% said said none of the above

    Likewise, technicians in the survey seem to be content with the state of thin=gs in the heavy-duty repair industry.

    When asked, “In the past year, your opinion of the industry has:

    • 52% said stayed the same
    • 27% said it improved
    • 21% said it was lowered

    Sun Auto adds five new locations in North Las Vegas

    Sun Auto announces the acquisition of five automotive service locations in North Las Vegas. With these additions, Sun Auto now operates 30 stores across Nevada.

    The stores will transition into established brands, including Sun Auto Tire & Service and Tire Works. Customers benefit from Sun Auto Network’s Price Match Guarantee, access to leading tire brands, and a nationwide warranty, according to a statement from the company.

    “Las Vegas is a priority market for our continued growth,” said Regional Vice President Chris Doster. “This strengthens our presence in North Las Vegas and allows us to serve more drivers with a consistent, high-quality experience, backed by the standards of the Sun Auto Network.”

    3 automakers issue recalls

    Three major automakers have announced recalls for some of their models.

    General Motors

    General Motors (GM) is recalling some 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, as well as 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, GMC Sierra 2500, and Sierra 3500 Crew Cab vehicles. The left or right-side roof rail airbag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture. A detached end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape and project the end cap or fragments of the inflator into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

    This recall applioes to some 2,819 vehicles. Dealers will replace the left and right-side RRAB modules. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 4. Owners may contact GM customer service at 888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 800-222-1020. GM’s number for this recall is N262549710.

    Ford

    The Ford Motor Company is recalling some 2020-2022 F-Super Duty F250, F350, F450, F550; 2021-2022 F600; and 2022 F750 pickup ytrucks previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 24V957. Biodiesel deposits may form on the pump drivetrain roller components, which could lead to failure of the high-pressure fuel pump. High-pressure fuel pump failure can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

    This recall some affects 7,105 vehicles. Dealers will update the powertrain control module software. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed March 30. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 26S17.

    Toyota

    Toyota is recalling some 2024-2025 Toyota Tundra, Tacoma Hybrid, Tacoma, RAV4 Hybrid, Land Cruiser Hybrid, Lexus GX550; 2024-2026 Tundra Hybrid; 2025 Sequoia Hybrid, Crown Signia, Grand Highlander, Lexus TX500 Hybrid, Lexus NX350 Hybrid; 2025-2026 Grand Highlander Hybrid and Lexus TX350 vehicles. The load-carrying capacity modification label may display inaccurate added-weight values. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, “Tire Selection and Rims.” A vehicle with an incorrect maximum capacity weight value may be overloaded, which can increase the risk of a crash.

    This recall affects 8,230 vehicles. Dealers will replace the load-carrying capacity modification label. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 9. Owners may contact Toyota’s customer service at 800-331-4331. Toyota’s numbers for this recall are 26LB04, 26LA04, 26TB07, and 26TA07.

    Daimler expands engine options for 2027, adds new Cummins models

    Daimler Truck North America recently announced an expanded power train portfolio for upcoming 2027 products, adding new Cummins engines alongside Detroit’s Gen 6 diesel lineup across Freightliner and Western Star models. 

    These additional offerings from Cummins complete the 2027 engine lineup and include the new B6.7 Octane gasoline engine, the clean sheet X10, and a redesigned X15. Together the Detroit and Cummins engines are designed to meet upcoming emissions requirements across a variety of applications.

    “Cummins is a critical partner for DTNA, and integrating their engines ensures our portfolio covers the full spectrum of applications for our customers. Their next generation of engines strengthen the range of powertrain solutions available across Freightliner and Western Star, and support customers as they prepare for upcoming emissions requirements and long-term operational needs,” said Joanna Buttler, general manager of Product Strategy and Market Development for Daimler Truck North America. 

    Cummins B6.7 Octane: New gasoline engine for medium-duty 

    The new Cummins B6.7 Octane, the company’s first purpose-built commercial grade gasoline engine, is designed specifically for medium‑duty applications and available in the Freightliner M2 106. The engine delivers up to 300 horsepower and 660 lb‑ft of torque, offering performance characteristics traditionally associated with diesel engines while using readily available 87‑octane gasoline.

    According to Cummins, the B6.7 Octane leverages Cummins’ HELM platform architecture, which allows different combustion systems to share a common engine platform, and offers:

    • Diesel‑like torque response for demanding duty cycles such as hilly terrain and cold environments.
    • A simple three‑way catalyst eliminates DEF, active regens, and diesel aftertreatment hardware.
    • Fuel efficiency up to 10 percent better than comparable gasoline engines.
    • Extended oil-service intervals of up to 15,000 miles contribute to lower operating costs. 

    “The B6.7 Octane provides fleets a commercial grade gasoline solution built for tough duty cycles without increasing maintenance demands,” said Jim Nebergall, executive director, Product and Market Strategy, Cummins. “It leverages our established B Series platform to maintain familiar service practices. By combining diesel-like durability with gasoline simplicity, the B6.7 Octane offers customers dependable performance in a footprint they already trust.”

    The B6.7 Octane fills a gap for fleets that want the simplicity of gasoline operation without sacrificing the torque response required in vocational, pickup‑and‑delivery and urban applications.

    Ordering for the B6.7 Octane opened earlier this month, and production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

    Other Cummins engines for 2027: New platforms and proven carryovers

    The X10 and X15 engines represent new developments built on decades of market experience, and both will be offered across a range of Freightliner and Western Star products. The Cummins X10 is a clean‑sheet design engineered to replace both the L9 and X12 engines. It delivers up to 380 horsepower for medium‑duty applications and up to 450 horsepower in heavy‑duty applications. This engine uses a 48-volt electrical system to heat emissions-control components quickly during cold starts, reducing emissions and supporting compliance with EPA 2027 requirements.

    The Cummins X15 is redesigned to meet 2027 EPA standards, continuing its reputation as a durable heavy‑duty powertrain staple. Cummins previously announced the X15 redesign as part of a broader shift to next‑generation combustion platforms. 

    Several established Cummins platforms will continue into the 2027 lineup and will be available across a range of Freightliner and Western Star trucks, maintaining their longstanding role in medium- and heavy-duty applications. 

    • B6.7 (diesel) — long‑established medium‑duty workhorse
    • L9N (natural gas) — reduced‑emissions solution with simplified aftertreatment
    • X15N (natural gas) — heavy‑duty and long‑haul option with renewable‑fuel capability

    Together, these engines give fleets multiple pathways to align their powertrain choice with duty‑cycle needs, fleet strategy, and long‑term operating goals.

    Detroit’s Gen 6 engine platform

    In February of this year, DTNA revealed its updated Detroit Gen 6 engines, to include the DD13, DD15, and DD16. Built on a platform with more than 1.2 million engines in service, these engines refine the previous generation’s design, providing confidence that the durability and reliability that Detroit is known for continue. 

    The Gen 6 engines deliver enhanced efficiency designed to help offset the impacts from emissions-related changes. Key updates include a redesigned and simplified fuel system that removes the need for amplified injection and supplies higher, stronger and more consistent fuel flow. Similarly, the addition of an asymmetric intake port increases swirl, and, combined with new fuel injectors, improves fuel and air mixing for a more complete combustion. The use of Miller timing on the camshaft reduces the work of compression, increases the compression ratio and contributes to overall engine efficiency.

    To meet compliance with stringent NOx requirements included in EPA’s 2027 standards, Detroit Gen 6 engines use a pre-Selective Catalytic Reduction (pre-SCR) system, positioned upstream of the primary aftertreatment system (ATS). This technology, combined with a thermal control valve, helps the ATS to reach operating temperature more quickly, reducing the need for parked regens. The ATS design preserves existing chassis space with no impact to back-of-cab packaging, a key advantage for vocational customers and truck equipment manufacturers. 

    The Detroit Gen 6 DD13 and DD15 engines will be available beginning in January 2027, with Gen 6 DD16 production following in January 2028.

    Snap-on recently announcer it has revised its live stream training days and times, giving automotive technicians greater flexibility to accommodate their busy schedules while still enhancing their diagnostic skills.

    Jason Gabrenas, diagnostics national trainer for Snap-on, will conduct live training at 7 p.m. CST: Tuesdays on Zoom and YouTube Wednesdays on Facebook.

    “With advancing vehicle technology, it’s important to stay up to date with training, so we added another opportunity during the week for technicians to learn the latest tips and techniques to get the most out of their diagnostic tools,” said Gabrenas. “During each training session, participants will receive 30 minutes of in-depth demonstrations and informational material and have 15 minutes for questions and answers.”

    Ohio tech wins Komatsu’s Advanced Technician Competition

    Komatsu honored the precision, skills and commitment of diesel technicians in its dealer network with the 2026 North America Komatsu Advanced Technician Competition (ATC) — held at Komatsu’s Cartersville Customer Center in Cartersville, Georgia. The competition spanned two days as 10 technicians were scored in the areas of technical capability, quality of work, and safety.

    Allen Cherrington of Columbus Equipment Company (Ohio) won the event and was crowned champion. Jorge Moreno of Lyle Equipment (southeastern U.S.) came in second place, and Nathan Specht of Komatsu Company-Owned Dealer East (Komatsu East) finished third.

    Earning a spot in the championship was its own competition as technicians from throughout North America participated in formal prequalifying events. Ultimately 10 technicians made their way to Cartersville to go head-to-head in events that ranged from machine inspection and troubleshooting techniques to customer relations and safety.

    “Pride in craftsmanship and the resulting success that it helps deliver for fleet managers and business owners is the driving force behind every technician in the Komatsu network — but bragging rights and being recognized among the best are great prizes as well,” said Griffin Reome, Director of Technical Workforce Development, Komatsu. “The real success here is shining a spotlight on the passion and discipline, and the resulting job satisfaction, that comes with being a technician in the heavy equipment industry.”
